  New Food Photography Toy

Many of you know I do this so I can photograph food and eat the best of what’s around. Mainly I’m a tech-guy. When I see tech combining with food, that’s exciting for me. When I see technology that will change everything without question, I’m Paul Revere.

Today I ride through your browser to scream how insane this new camera product is. They’re welcomed to give me one, but I’m already in line to buy one. It’s the first of its kind and the Kindergarten Sell is, “you can tap to refocus the image.” So:

Tap to REFOCUS the image:

It’s the Lytro (I think) from a company called Lytro (for sure). Know what I mean? Kodak never make, the Kodak. Anyhow, HDR and Tone Mapping were a super-thrill. This is nearly the second coming. A moderate explanation at this link will gently walk you through Light Fields which is what “refocusing the image” really has to do with.

It’s the 21st Century’s Pinhole Camera

There is no focus, there is no aperture setting, there are no moving parts save one button to power and one to shoot. Just as a pinhole camera had everything in focus, so too, does Lytro’s Light Field Camera. It’s the beginning of everything new again optically; it’s that important.

I’m imagining foreground, mid-ground and background to be dish of food, chef who made it and seating area in a restaurant. This one picture on your food blog could be refocused to three points of interest to tell the WHOLE story. This is the camera to do; the ONLY camera to do it.

It’s got me nearly speechless. Except that I can’t stop talking about it.
