Unjustly pulled?

Twitter lit up when Bloomberg Business announced that Target grocery pulled Hampton Foods off shelves. Typically recalls and pulls follow uproarious investigations and findings but this uproar came from the lack of any visible need to pull the products. Founded in 2011 by Joshua Tetrick and Josh Balk, Hampton Creek, formerly “Beyond Eggs, Inc.” produces Just Mayo, Just Cookies and Just Cookie Dough. Shoppers with egg allergies have become very familiar with these egg-free products.

The egg-free nature has landed Hampton Creek in trouble before. Since its Mayo contains no eggs, how can it be called mayo, argued Unilever, maker of Hellman’s mayo, and later, The American Egg Board. These grievances were never quite fully hatched and Hampton Creek did little to change the label in compliance with the FDA. “Pending a full review, Target today started a market withdrawal of Hampton Creek products, which are being removed from Target stores and Target.com,” the company told Bloomberg.

While vanished for now from 1,802 Target outlets, Hampton Creek’s goods are still available at Whole Foods, Safeway, Dollar Tree, and hundreds of cafeterias through contracts with food service companies.
