K Town Bistro in Kensington’s Antique Row looks even better with the famed FoodNewsie Mobile parked in front. I’ve been before and came again to drink, eat and, by jove, be remembered and find out that I was living a fun, double life as a music teacher. Have a look at a visit and some food in a bumbling entry.
My first memory of Antique Row is of my Uncle turning me upside down and holding me by my ankles. Some change and a few Micro Machines fell out of my pockets. I didn’t have an older brother (and I still don’t) so this was a new position to be in. It would be decades before I ever went back; and it was by mistake that I did some time last year, just months after K Town Bistro opened. ¶ Today, with an hour plus to kill before K Town re-opened for Dinner…

Erik Holzherr’s Church and State – no signs, no Tweets, no website; so what’s it got? It could be a good place to get spanked by hot nuns, but otherwise, is this another themed addition to DC’s growing number of speakeasies with a peak of buzz and then, ‘oh, I went there once when it opened.’?
What people notice first and foremost about Church and State is the atmosphere. You can’t avoid it, not that you would want to, and there’s no way to not acknowledge the decorations. Another Groupon site with a discreet twist – get your discount of 30% on the entire bill (most of the time) by reserving through the site when a restaurant in any of five major cities is listed.
What began in New York as a private sale site was finally expanded on September 15, 2010 to DC, Chicago, LA, and San Fran. Boston, Philadelphia and Las Vegas are next on the list – no word yet as to when in 2011. Introduced in May 2010, VillageVines already has over 400,000 subscribers and a hundred restaurants in New York alone. With each reservation at $10 and the total bill discount on food and alcohol at 30% a $100 dollar dinner will more than pay for itself – a $33 dollar meal will give an even break…

I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time and get treated to a half-size off-menu experiment from chef and restaurateur, Manuel Iguina. Sadly, all I had was my camera phone….
How about Mio for the New Year! All the new Food Newsie stories are just parked until next year, but this one is too exciting and mouth watering to not write about ahead of time while I should be wrapping presents! Yesterday I was overjoyed to have been invited to try something new for the 2011 January menu with the family that runs Mio at 1110 Vermont Avenue after having already finished off a suckling pig quesadilla – my Pisco Sour joined me a few minutes later and it was like family time!
