Food Safety Modernization Act signed today at The White House

The Food Safety Modernization Act signed at the White House today – it matters a whole lot to local produce growers, produce processors and farmer’s markets around the nation since the FDA now, legally has the power to levy fines or enforce decisions about recalls.

It seems that no diet is safe – not vegans, vegetarians, omnivores or carnivores. In the past week alone, two recalls came out for organic food. Even peanuts get recalled on occasion along with spinach. Some recalls sweep across entire regions of the country, others are confined to individual grocery stores, but one thing is the same and unchanged until President Obama signs the Food Safety Modernization Act today – all recalls are voluntary.

Nasty and vile looking but worth a bite, the Patagonia Toothfish endeavors for sustainability.

Environmentalists have championed fairness via Fair Food for the Patagonia Tooth fish known as Mero (jp) and Chilean Sea Bass (us) Merluza Negra (Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay) after the MSC caved in to Wal-mart and went lax on the rules governing what eco-labels should represent as sustainable and fair.

They’re not from Chile, and they’re not bass. There are few animals we eat that are so undeserving of the word “cute,” as the Antarctic Toothfish. These things are just truly alien and disgusting, but there they are priced up to $18 a pound caught by the ton and served as a delicious, meaty fish entree naturally containing few bones. For 15 years, these nasty-mug bottom feeders brought in from the cold waters have been at the heart of very intense debates about preservation.
